When:

Where:
Highland High School - Highland

Description

The Hudson Valley Bluegrass Association and the Highland Central School District will present a concert of Bluegrass music featuring the renowned banjoist Bill Keith and some of the best bluegrass musicians to be assembled in the Hudson Valley. The concert will take place at the Highland High School Auditorium on Tuesday evening, November 18, 2008, at 7:30 pm. The concert will be open to the public free of charge and will be the culmination of a full day of a pilot music-educational program “Bluegrass in Our Schools.” This program is designed by music educator Roy Coates to introduce elementary, middle school and high school students to the genre of Bluegrass.  It will cover the origin, history, instruments, artists and impact that this original American genre has made on popular music extending from 1950s rock and roll to artists including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, the Band on up to current artists such as Nickel Creek and David Grier.

Bill Keith has been recognized as the “Father of Modern Bluegrass Banjo.”  He was a member of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass band and later went on to perform with Ian and Sylvia, Jonathan Edwards and many others. He was a member of the Muleskinner project, referred to as “the first and perhaps only bluegrass super group,” that included David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Clarence White, Richard Greene and John Kahn. Bill Keith is the manufacturer of the “Keith Tuning Pegs” long considered the highest quality banjo tuner available. He is in demand as a featured presenter world-wide at banjo camps and bluegrass music events. For the past three years he has given generously of his time in introducing, giving the history of, and demonstrating the five-string banjo to public school students in the Hudson Valley.

Going towards New Paltz, make the left at the Hess station. Take the very first driveway that takes you to the big parking lot in the back of the school. The entrance to the auditorium is back there.
