Saturday, March 31 from 12-5pm at Christ Church, 20 Carroll Street, Poughkeepsie, NY. Bring your instrument and a recorder, if you have one.On Saturday, March 31st, the madness continues with a day-long mandolin and musicianship workshop. A general, mandolin specific workshop will be presented in the morning and in the afternoon, things open up to all instrumentalists (and vocalists) with two sessions aimed at helping you to improve your overall musicianship. Handouts for each session are provided and recording of these sessions is both permitted and encouraged. Here are the details:

Session I (12pm - 2pm)

A thorough and interactive session that will review the basics that are essential to mastering mandolin playing and will then present intermediate and advanced techniques to keep your fingers happily busy for some time to come. We have some specific topics in mind (below) but this is your session so please come prepared with specific things that you want help with!

- Sound Fundamentals … a review of how we get comfortable with the “three T’s” (tone-time-taste) in mandolin playing. Stuff you really need to memorize, microscopic examination of technique and strategies for eliminating problems,  finger-busters and right hand exercises … all included.

- Chord Basics … throw those chord books away and expand your vocabulary of chords beyond the basic Bluegrass ‘chop’ chord.

- Rhythm Boot Camp … You’ve got an arsenal of chords – now what? We’ll explain …

- Tools for improvisation … learn the one scale that is the single most important scale of all and how to get comfortable with it. Learn how to begin developing your own variations on your favorite tunes.

- Playing in harmony … what’s better than one mandolin? Two! And what’s better than two mandolins? Two mandolins playing in harmony!  Learn the basics of developing solid harmony lines

Session II (3pm - 5pm)

- Make Friends With Your Metronome - Super-Charge Your Playing With This Most Important Tool!

All Instruments |  All Levels

Playing with good time is fundamental to making good music, yet this critical aspect of musicianship is often ignored. This session is intended to help all musicians on any instrument improve their feel for rhythm by practicing with a metronome.  Even players who have been playing a long time can benefit from the material here. Topics covered include: metronome basics, playing standard time signatures, sub-dividing the beat; playing odd time signatures; accenting different beats; practicing rhythm to melody transitions; playing on, ahead of, or behind the beat; fun games to try with the metronome and other useful information intended to help you make friends with your metronome!

- Making the Most of Practice Time  |   All Levels   |    All Instruments

Whether you’re a mature musician or a rising one, your creative output will hinge on your knack for carving out practice time and using it productively. This session is open to all musicians regardless of level or instrument.

We're all told from our very first lessons on an instrument that we should practice daily but exactly how should we organize our practice time to ensure that we continually propel ourselves forward on our chosen instrument?

In this session we will present a methodology for setting up our practice space and for organizing the tunes, technique & skills for musicianship that we wish to develop in such a way as to maximize results with minimal effort. Practice strategies, logs and pre-performance timelines and inventories will be presented and discussed.
