Films on the Carter Family Fold and Lee Sexton, presented by Chad Hunter, archivist for Appalshop Archive
“Whoa, Mule” – Directed by: Herb E. Smith 1989 (3 minutes)
The title song of Lee Sexton's solo album is featured in this music video – one of the first and only traditional music videos to play on the country music cable channels. The video features alternating scenes of Sexton behind a mule-drawn plow, tending to his three-acre garden in rural Linefork, Kentucky, and a performance of the Lee Sexton Band at a square dance at the Blackey Senior Citizens Center.
“Sunny Side of Life” – Directed by: Scott Faulkner, Anthony Slone, and Jack Wright 1985 (58 minutes)
During the 1920s and '30s, the records and radio shows of A.P. Carter, his wife Sara, and sister-in-law Maybelle spread the music of the southern mountains around the world and earned the Carter family international fame. Sunny Side of Life celebrates the legacy of this country music dynasty by focusing on the Carter Family Fold in Maces Spring, Virginia--an old-time music hall founded in 1975 by Janette, Joe, and Gladys, the children of A.P. and Sara Carter. Sunny Side of Life features Saturday night performances at the Fold by such artists as the Home Folks, Red Clay Ramblers, and Hot Mud Family, as well as lots of flatfooting and clogging by the audience. The film includes a history of the Carter Family and an examination of the way old-time music continues to be integrated into the life of this community.
Old Time and Bluegrass music on film, with local film/video curator Russell Scholl (55 min.)
Russell Scholl returns with an all new program, sharing more gems from the archive. Included will be highlights of more than six decades of bluegrass and old-time music on film, including rare vintage musical short subjects, television and film appearances.

Sunday, Sept 14, 1:00-10:00pm
(at Jalopy)

Workshops ($25 each, 4 for $80)
1:00pm: Instrument Building – Masters of guitar and mandolin building Wayne Henderson, Gerald Anderson, Spencer Strickland and Jimmy Edmonds will discuss how to craft the perfect instrument. "You just get a pile of good wood, and you get yourself a sharp whittling knife," Wayne Henderson explained in an issue of Popular Mechanics, "and then you carve away anything that doesn't look like a guitar." People have to wait as much as 10 years for the Henderson guitar, even Eric Clapton.

2:00pm: Tales from Rugby, VA. Population 7:
Wayne Henderson, guitar player and maker, and Jon Lohman, Virginia State Folklorist weave stories about the amazing people and places in Rugby and in Greyson County. "We have to take turns being the mayor, the preacher and the town drunk," says Wayne Henderson.

3:00pm: Flatpicks and Hot Licks
John Picket, Spencer Strickland, Stevie Barr and Jacob Eller race through some of bluegrass's most complicated songs. They will speak with the audience and tell you how it is done!

4:00pm Songs of the Carter Family
Wayne Henderson, Jimmy Edmonds, Ryan Blevins, Amber Collins and Jacob Eller explore the music of the Carter Family.

Concert: Best of Virginia
$15

7pm:
Wayne Henderson's top-notch finger-picking is a source of great pleasure; his guitar playing has been enjoyed at Carnegie Hall, in three national tours of "Masters of the Steel-String Guitar," and in seven nations in Asia. In addition to his reputation as a guitarist,

8:30PM
Jimmy Edmonds’ hometown of Galax is home to the world's oldest and largest fiddler's convention. Every August, music lovers gather to compete, or just sit back and take in some of the best playing to be heard anywhere. Jimmy Edmonds has won the contests, and is world-renowned for hit fiddle playing.

9:00PM
Gerald Anderson and Spencer Strickland play some amazing music. Listen to Gerald on guitar and Spencer on mandolin.

10:00PM
No Speed Limit is a brilliant young bluegrass band from this hazy blue heartland of the South. The band performs originals as well as a few classics, all of which are imbued with a special fire. Like all great bands, they keep the heritage alive by making it sparkle with quality. With Steve Barr on banjo, Amber Collins on lead vocals, Jacob Eller on bass, Ryan Blevins on mandolin and Josh Pickett on guitar.
