Description
The Virginia-based roots music duo Alex Caton and Peter Winne will be appearing Monday, September 13th at 36 Main Restaurant & Wine Bar in New Paltz. Despite the long distance they are traveling, the show will be a homecoming of sorts for both musicians. Winne spent 6 years in the Hudson Valley attending Vassar College and playing with the former Gardiner, NY-based string band The Powder Kegs. Caton has family in New Paltz and she recorded her last album The Sinners and the Saved at Levon Helm's studio in Woodstock, NY. The show promises to showcase a dynamic mix of energetic Appalchian fiddle tunes, classic country, gospel, and original songs.
In the short time since they've been playing together, Alex and Pete have quickly established themselves as the newest link in central Virginia's unusually rich acoustic music lineage. Individually, the two have no shortage of kudos. Winne is a 2010 Berea College Appalachian music fellow and a former winner on A Prairie Home Companion's "People in their Twenties" competition on NPR. Caton is an Albemarle County Champion fiddler and was nominated for a 2009 Virginia Comission for the Arts Heritage Award. Together, the duo plays music that feels as much at home in a modern big-city venue as it would have at the Grand Ole Opry in the 1940's. Alex plays fiddle, banjo, and guitar and Pete plays guitar and banjo. Both musicians sing, delivering harmonies that recall the singing of fellow girl-guy roots music duo Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.
The music starts at 8pm.
