Those who have attended the Family Farm Festival held at the Epworth Center in High Falls for the past six years know they were onto something pretty special. A convergence of dozens of local organic farmers and thousands of good-food lovers, the Festival was a homespun effort pulled off each year by two stalwart organizers: Dina Falconi and Jen Prosser. With Prosser’s recent move to New Mexico, Falconi has handed off the festival to a group of local organizers. The first step in the re-organization process is fundraising, and the group’s inaugural effort—an artisanal pizza and music fete—promises to fill the bellies of local supporters of sustainable, regional agriculture while filling the coffers of the fledgling group.
The Green Pizza Fundraiser for the Family Farm Festival was born when organizers sought a fundraising event to hold at approximately the same time of year the Family Farm Festival has traditionally been held. “Because of financial and organizational difficulties, we’re postponing the debut of the newly organized festival until September, 2009,” says the new organization’s President, Thea Harvey. “We’re hoping the Green Pizza Fundraiser will bring in people who’ve enjoyed the Family Farm Festival in past years. We’re looking to build a broad base of community support.”
The group hopes to bring in the throngs with the promise of pizza—not just any pizza, but all-you-can-eat, hand-crafted, artisanal pizzas made from local ingredients and baked to crispy perfection in a wood-fired cob oven. Two pies will be churned out every four minutes, and they will be topped according to diners’ requests (among the offerings will be locavore 100-mile diet pizzas, non-dairy pizzas, and dessert pizzas). Accompanying the pizza will be live music, an heirloom tomato tasting, and tours of an on-site permaculture farm and forest garden and a timber-framed strawbale house under construction. In addition, organizers will present the history of the Family Farm Festival, describe its current evolution—including details on additional workshops and its celebration of homesteading—and solicit volunteers for the organizing effort. “We envision the Festival to be the annual event celebrating the local sustainable economy,” says Harvey, “and we want it to be a chance for everyone to learn the skills they need to a live a more locally-rooted life.”
