East Hartford’s Annual Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival will kick-off for the 14th year on Thursday evening, July 30 in Martin Park. This year’s line-up features Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster. The four-day event begins at 6:00 PM on Thursday with an opening by the Lovell Sisters followed by Bearfoot, and Special Consensus. Closing the evening , will be Alison Brown, jazz-edged banjo player extraordinaire. On Friday, the 31st, music begins at 11:00 am with the Wells Family Band and continues with many different groups throughout the day and closes with the Del McCoury Band at 10:45 pm.
On Saturday morning at 10:35, the James King Band will open the day and be followed by numerous national groups, including two multi-award winning bands, Dailey & Vincent and Rhonda Vincent & the Rage. The evening will close with internationally acclaimed fiddler, Natalie MacMaster.
Sunday will feature more bluegrass, a gospel music set by James King and the 2009 Band Competition with five bands competing for financial rewards and a recording session.
The Pratt and Whitney Family Stage will have activities for young and old throughout the festival. Many music-related workshops will be offered to attendees, free of charge. A Kid’s academy will be open to children 8 to 15 years old attending the festival, giving

Craft, food and product vendors will be on hand, and people should bring a chair or blanket to sit on. High-back chairs, tents, dogs, bicycles and alcohol are not allowed in the concert-viewing area.
Opportunities will abound for skilled and novice musicians of all ages to play bluegrass music with others in the campground area.
Camping in the rough opens at noon on Thursday. Discount rates for camping and general admission tickets are available until July 1. Non-camping East Hartford residents are admitted free with proof of residency.
