Starting on July 23 and continuing through the weekend to July 26, Norwich welcomes one of its favorite festivals back into town, the Norwich Family Bluegrass Festival. This year marks the 25th year this festival has been held. While other area festivals are scaling down and cutting back due to the current economic situation, the Norwich Family Bluegrass Festival has a line-up that is one of the best ever. The promoters, Mike & Maryann Tirella and Tom & Cheryl Doerfel have made a commitment to the fans of this festival to improve their festival every year and the fans will not be disappointed.
Heading the show this year are two bands from Virginia, the James King Band and the Jeannette Williams Band. Recently in Nashville, both James and Jeannette were awarded best male and female vocalist of the year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music. Other bands appearing include Carolina Sonshine from North Carolina, The Larry Gillis Band from Georgia, Remington Ryde from Pennsylvania and Hard Ryde from Ontario, Canada who were named the #1 band in Canada at the Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards. The host bands, The Cabin Fever Band and the Doerfel Family will also be appearing to delight the crowd. Back by popular demand are Dave Nichols and Spare Change from upstate New York, Angelica Grim from California and Bill & Maggie Anderson from Virgina. Two other new bands to the festival that we’re all excited about is the Texas Rose Band from Pennsylvania and the Matthews Family from New York.
A weekend at a bluegrass festival is still one of the best deals around for a family vacation. At just $60 per person for four days ($50 in advance) festival goers get a free campsite, a great stage show, field picking throughout the 4 days and nights, workshops on various bluegrass acoustic instruments and vendors with food and crafts. The festival is held at the Chenango Fairgrounds, a great venue with restrooms and hot showers on the grounds, plenty of parking, a covered audience tent with plenty of room for RV’s and tents. Each child under 16 is admitted free with one paid adult.
The music starts on Thursday at 1 pm with an Open Stage, an opportunity for up and coming bands to get stage experience and exposure. Sign up in advance with Mike Tirella. Non-stop music continues until 10 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday the music is from 10 am to 10 pm. There will be a Gospel Sing under the big tent on Sunday, starting at 9 am with music continuing from the main stage from 10 am to 3 pm. There will also be a Jam Tent for beginning and experienced musicians who want to join with other musicians, which is organized by Danny Stewart, a favorite hangout at the festival.
There is breakfast daily in the Grange Hall and daily activities for children. So bring your RV or tent, or pack up your lawn chairs and come for the day. We’ll be there, rain or shine. Daily prices are available on the website along with the full schedule of bands and activities.
