For a guy that received his higher education in a Phys Ed program, Byron Berline’s life certainly took off in a different direction!  Around when he graduated college he was playing with (of all bluegrass artists) Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys.  After graduation from college and a few years working with Uncle Sam, he decided to leave the soccer balls and baseball bats behind for his bow and fiddle.  He has played fiddle from the age of 5.  He won three National fiddle contests.  He headed for the west coast and stayed there for 26 years, where he (among other things) recorded with the Burrito Brothers and played a bit part in the movie The Rose.  He played with various groups and was a founder in the group California, named the IBMA instrumental group of the year for ‘92-94.

In 1995 Byron moved back to his roots, and opened a Guthrie, OK fiddle shop “Double Stop” and formed his own band.  He has helped promote Bluegrass and has recorded with many of the top musicians, and appeared on TV and film.  The musicians that he has played with over the years constitute a list of the “best of” bluegrass, country, and folk artists in this country.  Not only Monroe, but others such as Dylan, Scruggs, Nelson, Parsons, the Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Harris, Gill…the list goes on and on.

He has led or been a member of the following bands : Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, 1966 - 67; Dillard & Clark, 1969-1970; Dillard Expedition, 1970-71; Country Gazette, 1971-75; Sundance, 1975-85; Berline, Crary & Hickman, 1978-90; L. A. Fiddle Band, 1978-93; California, 1990-96; Byron Berline Band, 1996- Present.

Do you know who is coming to perform for the HVBA?

I don’t get excited about much, but Byron Berline played the fiddle for the greatest bluegrass-country-rock band ever, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and he also played fiddle on the Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris albums, "GP" and "Grievous Angel." Don’t you get it? Man, this was the greatest group of musicians and vocalists ever to record music.

If that doesn’t fry your bacon, he also played fiddle on the double album with Steve Stills on Manassas. Those of you who can obtain obscure cuts off the internet, check out the song "Hide it so Deep" from the Manassas album to hear an amazing bluegrass/county fiddle intro to kick off the song.

Well, this is just one guy’s opinion, this guy has all of those Flying Burrito Brothers and Gram Parsons CD’s, including all the out-takes. Do I like this stuff of what

You only forgot Rolling Stones Honky Tonk Woman (long version), the groundbreaking l959 album with the Dilliards (Pickin' and Fiddlin'), his fiddlin' dad Lou Berline, and well.....one could go on-and-on. Sorry I can't attend; Philadelphia PA area; a bit too far. Maybe we can get him down here one of these days.
