Jack DiCroce has spoken with Audie Blaylock about his musical career and his interview called, "A Conversation with Audie Blaylock," is now on our website. Audie Blaylock & Redline will be featuring Jesse Brock for our annual Spring Concert.

Winner of the 2009 International Bluegrass Music Awards Mandolin Performer of the Year, Jesse Brock has spent a lifetime in bluegrass, starting with his family band at the age of nine, and later with national acts such as Chris Jones and the Night Drivers (1 album) and The Lynn Morris Band (2 albums). Jesse's first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry at the young age of 11, performed on stages with Ricky Skaggs, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, The Tony Rice Unit, and the list goes on.

Jesse has also honed his skills all over the world, making his first trip to Europe in 1997, and returning several times since. He spent a short time in Bulgaria as well, recording with female Bulgarian singer/guitarist/leader; Lili Drumeva, (Lilly of the West).

Jesse was an integral part of Michael Cleveland's two solo albums on Rounder, "Flame Keeper" and "Let 'Er Go, Boys!", as well as the following band albums, "Leavin' Town" and "Fired Up". Both band c.d.'s have garnered IBMA's "Instrumental of the Year" (2009 & 2011) and "Instrumental Group of the Year" awards, 4 years in a row (2007-2010). Jesse has also toured and recorded with The Dale Ann Bradley Band 2 albums), where he and Michael first toured together.

Jesse is also a solo artist in his own right, with an IBMA award-nominated CD "Kickin' Grass" on Pinecastle Records that includes an A-list of pickers, and was co-produced with his former band mate, Ron Stewart. Recently, Jesse co-produced Rick Lang's album (long-time friend, songwriter/singer) , "Look to the Light", another multi-award-nominated project. Rick Lang contracted John Miller & Jesse Brock to arrange all the original songs and produce the album, which went on to be in the first round of the Grammy's, the final round of the GMA Dove Awards, and the final round of the IBMA awards (2011).
HVBA Showcase: Hot Mustard

When: Friday, April 27
Where: Christ Church - 20 Carroll Street, Poughkeepsie
Hot Mustard started as a New Hampshire Arts Grant apprenticeship between Bruce Stockwell and Bill Jubett.

Bruce & Bill put together a number of double-banjo arrangements over the course of the grant, and decided to take their show on the road. Adding to the band are their sweethearts and long-time musical companions, April Jubett on guitar & vocals and Kelly Stockwell on double bass.

Bruce has been playing and teaching banjo for years in Putney, VT, where he is often overheard telling other musicians to "put the mustard to it" meaning to play the next tune with extra spice. Bill & April have been singing those high, lonesome harmonies together in a few local bluegrass bands and around the house for 5 years now. Bill plays fiddle as well as banjo. Kelly lugs her bass all over New England and can be found thumping away at most great jams at all picking parties and festivals and now as the heartbeat of Hot Mustard.

The Evolution of Bluegrass - Gone LIVE
What an amazing day it was! On Wednesday, the HVBA presented the second in the Marist College Center for Lifetime Studies program at Locust Grove. Our second class was a total treat for the over 60 participants. A panel discussion about bluegrass festivals featured Mary Doub (Producer of the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival), Mary Burdette (Assistant Director of Grey Fox), and Ruth Oxenberg (Co-Producer, of "Bluegrass Journey") were the featured panelists. Their presentations were so informative, interesting, and personal. It sparked many questions from the audience. One of the questions was answered beautifully by a visitor to the class, Bill Keith.

All of this has been filmed and is being edited by our amazing videographer, Fred Robbins. Our first class is now LIVE for your viewing on the HVBA YouTube Channel. While this is almost the entire session, it is well worth watching. We think this is one of the most exciting projects we are engaged in. Two people have already made public comments on the video and we invite you to leave yours, as well.

MandoDoc writes: "This should be required viewing by all serious students of this music. A fine job all around, folks. Look forward to subsequent installments."

And someone named Tom wrote: "I came home from working third shift today, and saw your post. I was pulled up the video of the first class, and was planning on skimming through it. Well, one hour and six minutes later.....hahahahaha. What a great video! I would encourage everyone to take a look at this, and enjoy it. This was a very entertaining format, and the presentation material was extremely well done. Nice job."
Earl Scruggs
If you missed Jeff Anzevino's Poughkeepsie Journal article about legendary Earl Scruggs, you may now read it on our website. Well written, this article captures the importance and loss of Earl Scruggs to the world of bluegrass.

From Wayne Fugate:
John McGann, Professor at Berklee and amazingly talented mandolin/ guitar player passed away this past Friday. You'd be surprised how many folks know John or were touched by him in some way. He taught Sierra hull while she was enrolled there. He was an amazing musician and an even better, truly wonderful person and I mention this all to you just in case you want to acknowledge his passing on the website. Info is here.
