| Harmony Workshop |
Harmony Workshop with Val Mindel/Gene Yellin
Tickets are selling now and you want to be sure to reserve your spot. If you love singing harmony and want to know more, this is the workshop for you. It's for beginners as well as those who already have a head start singing bluegrass harmony.
In General: We'll work on basics of chord-based bluegrass harmonies, tips on blend, technique, ornamentation and more. The workshop is "hands on," with lots of singing and (depending on the time) opportunities to break up into smaller groups to work on duets and trios with other workshop members. Recording devices are encouraged, since as well as teaching the "how to" we also provide workable harmony parts for the songs we teach. Everything is taught by ear, with word sheets. The workshop is limited to 20 participants plus organizers.
Workshop (1 pm to 5pm): In this time slot, we focus on harmony basics, finding harmonies above and below the lead (tenor and baritone parts) as well as harmony "stacks" and more, as we have time. The idea is that everyone comes away understanding how harmonies are made and some strategies for finding harmonies on the fly, such as in jam situations ... and of course a working understanding of three to four songs that are great to sing. Cost for HVBA members: $50. Non-Members pay $55. Reserve your place here.
Val Mindel is a founding member of the Any Old Time string band out of California (Arhoolie label: "I Bid You Goodnight") and has taught various aspects of bluegrass and country harmony for years, at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music and at music camps such as Augusta Heritage Center and Puget Sound Guitar Workshop as well as workshops around the country and abroad. Currently she is teaching country harmony at Jalopy in Brooklyn. You can hear her online at www.valandemmy.com.
Gene Yellin is well known in the New York bluegrass world as both a singer and a guitar player. He's played and recorded with such luminaries as the late Hazel Dickens and Gene Lowinger (former fiddler with Bill Monroe) and has been in a number of bands including Breakfast Special (Kenny Kosek, Tony Trischka, Andy Statman, etc.), Yellin Grass (with brother Bob), and Hudson Valley favorite, American Flyer (Ben Freed, Ethan Kende, Phil Zimmerman) for many years from the late '80s through 2007. |

The Annual Arlington Street Fair is fast approaching and the HVBA will be well represented with five Member Bands performing along with The Buffalo Gals, Mathilda and Alice Rosi-Marshall. Mark Hudson will be at a table selling HVBA tee shirts. George Nasca will be there with information and membership forms from the HVBA. Gene Lowinger, a former fiddler for Bill Monroe, will be be there to sign his photographic books about the Father of Bluegrass Music and we will have five hours of uninterrupted bluegrass music.
