| Guess Who's Coming To Poughkeepsie |

The Laurie Lewis Band
Fresh off of our successful Tony Rice Unit concert and not willing to let any grass (even bluegrass) grow under our feet, the HVBA is excited to announce that the Laurie Lewis Band will perform in Poughkeepsie on Friday, November 19. We are SO excited and we wanted you to be sure to listen to Laurie's set at Grey Fox on Saturday, July 16 at 12:40.
Please visit Laurie's website and stay tuned for more details in our next HVBA Newsletter. |

| Why Should Your Band Join the HVBA? |
| Just in case you were wondering whether of not to have your band join the HVBA, here is one of the top reasons for joining: our website has been attracting a great deal of attention and many individuals and promoters have looked at our website to find bands for small parties to large. Only Member Bands receive these notices. Your band name will appear on our website on every single page. We currently have 15 Member Bands (one is not listed) and we hope your band will also join this list. The cost is $25/year and you can sign up right now by clicking this link. |

| Harmony Workshop |
The HVBA will be offering a Harmony Workshop this Fall if enough people are interested in it. We have two possibilities to choose from. One is a half day workshop and the other is a full day. Please take our poll and let us know if you are interested in either of these. If you would be willing to take either one, you may check both boxes.
Harmony workshop possibilities with Val Mindel/Gene Yellin
In General: We'll work on basics of chord-based bluegrass harmonies, tips on blend, technique, ornamentation and more. The workshop is "hands on," with lots of singing and (depending on the time) opportunities to break up into smaller groups to work on duets and trios with other workshop members. Recording devices are encouraged, since as well as teaching the "how to" we also provide workable harmony parts for the songs we teach. Everything is taught by ear, with word sheets. The workshop is limited to 20 participants plus organizers.
A half-day workshop (1 pm to 4 or 4:30 pm): In this time slot, we focus on harmony basics, finding harmonies above and below the lead (tenor and baritone parts) as well as harmony "stacks" and more, as we have time. The idea is that everyone comes away understanding how harmonies are made and some strategies for finding harmonies on the fly, such as in jam situations ... and of course a working understanding of three to four songs that are great to sing. Suggested cost per participant: $35.
A full-day workshop (10 am to 4 or 4:30 pm, with a break for lunch): This adds to what we normally do with harmony basics and allows more time for exploring harmony stacks, addressing blend, ornaments and other issues singers inevitably encounter ... and of course just singing with each other in small groups. Participants come away with six or so songs that they really know, plus a better idea of how to move forward with their harmony singing. Suggested cost per participant: $65.
Val Mindel is a founding member of the Any Old Time string band out of California (Arhoolie label: "I bid you goodnight") and has taught various aspects of bluegrass and country harmony for years, at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music and at music camps such as Augusta Heritage Center and Puget Sound Guitar Workshop as well as workshops around the country and abroad. Currently she is teaching country harmony at Jalopy in Brooklyn. You can hear her online at www.valandemmy.com.
Gene Yellin is well known in the New York bluegrass world as both a singer and a guitar player. He's played and recorded with such luminaries as the late Hazel Dickens and Gene Lowinger (former fiddler with Bill Monroe) and has been in a number of bands including Breakfast Special (Kenny Kosek, Tony Trischka, Andy Statman, etc.), Yellin Grass (with brother Bob), and Hudson Valley favorite, American Flyer (Ben Freed, Ethan Kende, Phil Zimmerman) for many years from the late '80s through 2007. |

Fred Robbins has added several recordings to his Ken Landreth collection.
Fred also sent this to us:
I've sent this out before, but it always comes to mind just before Grey Fox.
Three years ago, while waiting for my ride to the festival, I was reading the morning newspaper and saw this... |
